Fireworks For The Fourth-Two Out Of Three Raises Are Announced

From UT Sports:

“I can say unequivocally that we have two of the best coaches in America, and I am excited to know they will continue to be ambassadors of our great university for many years to come. Their roles in the community, as fundraisers for both athletics and the university itself are unparalleled,” said UT President John Petersen. “UT Athletics has a tremendous economic impact on our University, city and state. These coaches and their respective programs have helped put UT and Knoxville on the map.”

Well, that announcement should give local radio a little more to talk about until the first kickoff of the football season. This topic is one that has no in-between area. You just thought that Tennessee was divided into East, West, and Middle Tennessee sections. Actually it’s only divided into two sections; the Fulmer supporters and the Fulmer detractors. Actually, though I think that I’m wrong; I think that there is a middle ground, and I think that I fall into it. I’m decidedly in the “Good God, could we stop talking about the coaches for a while?” category. That being said I do have some comments on the new contracts for Bruce Pearl and Phil Fulmer.

Bruce Pearl:

I don’t have much of a problem with Bruce’s contract. The basketball team makes money now, the basketball team has national prominence now, and was ranked number one in the country last year. Bruce is a hot commodity, and if he was let out of his contract he would be out of work for about as long as it takes Bobby Maize to free-style a rhyme. Bruce’s contract is fine. He’s led the team to two Sweet Sixteens and the SEC Championship last year. That’s a recent history of winning, and he deserves to be paid for it. Some of the specifics: Read more »
